“The Corridor” Through Syunik – A Path to Armenia’s Destruction

August 15, 2024

The Pan-Armenian movement “Ashkharazhokhov” opposes any version of the so-called “Zangezur corridor,” as this project would lead to the loss of control over Syunik and the Armenian-Iranian border.

To understand the reason for our concern, we urge examining the map of transport routes published in 2021 by the Russian-backed Eurasian Development Bank-after the occupation of Artsakh – which was pre-approved by Baku, Yerevan, and Ankara.

So, what is the “Zangezur corridor”? It is a highway from occupied Armenian Gandzak to occupied Nakhichevan via Artsakh and Vayots Dzor, as well as a railway through Meghri, enabling the Baku regime to link occupied Armenian lands – from Utik and Artsakh to Nakhichevan, Ayrarat, and Turuberan-into a single bloc.

Why is this dangerous? The experience of Artsakh has shown that Yerevan has no intention of independently controlling strategic roads. This refers to the Stepanakert-Goris highway, which Baku and Turkish occupiers call the “Lachin corridor.” This means Turkish and Baku-backed forces could, at any moment, cut off communication between Yerevan and Goris, Kapan, and Meghri – just as they did in Artsakh. In other words, according to the project’s authors, Armenia is to be paralyzed and ultimately dismembered by the Turks.

Furthermore, the Baku regime aims to build a railway through Armenia’s northern regions, allowing Turkey to encircle the country from both the south and the north.

Meanwhile, Yerevan’s authorities lull the Armenian people to sleep with tales of “peace.” The reality is that if Turkish-backed roads and railways are constructed, it will be the occupiers-not Armenian border guards-who control Armenia’s transport links to Georgia and Iran. The occupiers will be able to blockade Armenia at any moment, whenever they desire.
